WHAT'S HAPPENING - SCHOOL NEWS

Lighthouse School Opening
LHS building
The Lighthouse School’s opening held on November 21 can only be slated a great success. The hall was filled with some two hundred well-wishers who came to congratulate and wish the Lighthouse School family well.

The School was officially opened by His Excellency The Governor Mr. Peter Smith as he cut a bright orange ribbon, releasing the doors.

Master of Ceremonies for the day’s programme was Mrs. Shari Bovell, Deputy Principal, while Principal, Mrs. Marge Quinland, extended a welcome to all who were present. Brief remarks were given by Mr. Peter Smith, Governor; the Hon. Roy Bodden, Minister for Education; Mrs. Joy Basdeo, Permanent Secretary in the Ministry for Education and Mrs. Nyda Flatley, Chief Education Officer.

Performing artistes were students of George Hicks High School and Mr. Rudy Myles, along with the school’s students.

Also of note, was the recognition paid to Mrs. Mary Trumbach, former President of the school’s Parent-Teacher Association. Present Home School Association President Susan Edwards gave the vote of thanks.

It was a delight to have seen long-time friends and significant contributors to the establishment of the new school, Mr. Truman Bodden, former Minister for Education and Dr. John Tudor, former Chief Education Officer.

Lighthouse School's Childrens' Theatre
A new facility in the Lighthouse School is the Children’s Theatre, an extension of the Library Media Centre. It is another means by which students can enhance their reading for comprehension and pleasure.

Having read a story, poem, or other piece of writing, students have an opportunity and space where they are able to dramatise it.

There was a special opening of the Children’s Theatre on November 23 … Reading Day. It was celebrated by the performance of a puppet show by students of Miss Mellony Bryan’s English class at George Hicks High School. It was quite an experience for both the high school students and those of the Lighthouse School. Also participating in the school’s reading day activities, were students of Miss Lesma Panton’s class who read to the LHS students in their classrooms. Mrs. Jean Bahadur, principal of Cayman Prep. and High Schools read to the students during their assembly.

Following Reading Day, was a visit by Dr. John Tudor, former Chief Edcuation Officer, on Tuesday, November 27 who read stories to the students

On December 4, Mr. Derek Tyler, Biologist and Head of Year 12 at John Gray High School gave a hands-on talk on Amphibians. He introduced the students to newts, toads and a caecilian. The students were enamoured with the novelty of being allowed to touch them.

Trip to Disney World
DumboOn April 12 through 17, 2001, approximately 23 students along with teachers, parents and guardians will be going to Disney World. Why Disney World? It might be surprising to know that the majority of our students have never been on an airplane and most students their age wish to go to Disney World. So far efforts have been made to raise funds through Pirates Week, a "Boot Sale", and the making and selling of Christmas Tree ornaments. Other plans are to have a Garage Sale.

Letters seeking sponsorship for the students have not met expectations. It is anticipated that through this medium, the response will improve. To those persons still trying to make up their mind... please consider the smile on a youngster's face at the real touch of Mickey Mouse! Kindly contact the school, should you feel the need to make a contribution.

Site-base on the move
Over the past few months, members of staff at the Lighthouse School have been busy with the implementation of Action Plans. This is mainly due to the Mutual Commitments and Expectations exercise in which teachers participated at the beginning of the 2000-2001 school year. Principal Marge Quinland was pleased at seeing the revived school newspaper at publication stage; in addition to the establishment of the school's web site. The overall look indicates a step into the future and enhancement of programmes for all students.

Some of the areas in which LHS staff have made a commitment, this year, are Curriculum development, Public Awareness, and Legislation for the inclusion of persons with special needs.

A Day in the Life of the LHS Bus Driver
A day in the life of the bus driver is a very challenging one. Safety, Punctuality and Care are our top priorities. Our day starts at 6:30 each morning and our main duty is to transport children to and from school on a daily basis.

Swimming, Library and field trips also form a part of our daily duties. We take our job very seriously because it is very important for us to take special care that each student arrives safely at his or her destination.

As a bus driver on the road, a lot of patience must be exercised because there is so much traffic to deal with both in the mornings and evenings. But at the end of each day when our mission is complete, we can feel good within ourselves that we have performed a job well done and look forward to giving our best for another day.
